Food redistribution remains at the heart of Gratitude.

Every week, we rescue and redistribute approximately 23 tonnes of food that might otherwise go to waste.

That is more than 1,000 tonnes every year.

Food that could have been discarded is instead redirected back into our community.

In an average week, approximately 4,598 people take food home from Gratitude.

But behind every number is a person.

A parent able to put dinner on the table.

A child with something in their lunchbox.

An older person able to make their weekly shop stretch further.

For us, sustainability and community support go hand in hand.

A Second Life for Everything

Gratitude has become far more than a food service.

Every month, more than 70 families receive children’s support packages containing nappies, toiletries, soaps, creams, clothing and other essential items.

Together, these packages support around 160–200 children every month.

Throughout the year, unwanted toys, decorations, gifts and food are also given a new purpose through celebrations including Christmas, Easter, Chanukah, Eid and Purim.

Instead of allowing useful items to sit unused or be thrown away, we find someone who needs them.

Because reuse is not only good for the planet.

It can also bring dignity, joy and connection.

Giving School Essentials a Second Life

This summer, Gratitude held a Back to School Giveaway.

School uniforms, shoes, bags, stationery and books were redistributed to local families instead of going to waste.

For many households, preparing children for a new school year can be expensive.

By reusing quality items already available within our community, we helped reduce waste while helping children return to school feeling prepared and included.

One item reused may seem small.

But multiplied across a community, those choices matter.

Repurpose With Purpose

In August, Gratitude partnered with Sky Studios Elstree for a special upcycling experience for local children and families.

Sky generously provided its space and materials left over from previous film productions.

Instead of being discarded, those materials were transformed.

Around 50 children turned fabrics and production materials into treasure buckets, woven creations, cards, picture frames, collages and artwork.

What had once belonged to a film set was given an entirely new life.

This was more than a craft day.

Children experienced sustainability in action.

They saw that creativity can replace waste.

They learned that something unwanted can still hold value.

And they discovered that protecting the environment can be imaginative, practical and fun.

A Waste-Free World Starts With Us

This year, Gratitude also launched a monthly community litter pick.

The message is simple:

We refuse to accept pollution in our local area as normal.

Over June, July and August, more volunteers joined us each month.

Families, children and local residents came together to care for the streets and spaces we all share.

Bag by bag, the difference became visible.

But these mornings are about more than litter.

They are about responsibility.

Environmental awareness.

And understanding that the condition of our community is something we can all influence.

Cleaner streets. Greener spaces. Stronger communities.

Looking after the planet does not begin somewhere far away.

It begins outside our own front doors.

Sharing What We Have

Our commitment to reuse does not stop within Gratitude.

Whenever we receive more than our own community can use, we share it.

Surplus supplies are redistributed to other food banks, homeless shelters, women’s refuge support services and organisations supporting people further afield.

Nothing useful should be wasted while somebody else needs it.

That principle runs through everything we do.

In September, Gratitude volunteers, friends and supporters also prepared special Jewish holiday food bags for hospital patients unable to be home for the holidays.

Fresh produce and thoughtful treats were brought together to create comfort, connection and a reminder that people had not been forgotten.

Again, resources became something more.

They became kindness.

Turning Waste Into Worth

Environmentalism does not always require huge gestures.

Sometimes it starts with rescuing one bag of food.

Passing on one school uniform.

Reusing one piece of fabric.

Picking up one piece of litter.

Then doing it again.

And encouraging somebody else to join you.
